Privacy notice
Last updated 23 October 2026
Teach Me Medicine helps medical students learn a topic and teach it back. This notice explains what we keep about you, why, and what you can do about it. We follow the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023.
If you use the app without an account
Your notes, study history and choices stay in your browser on that device. We don't receive them. Clearing your browser's data removes them.
If you create an account
- Your account: your email address, your name if you add one, your timezone (so your streak follows your own day), and when you agreed to this notice. Your password is stored only in a scrambled form that nobody, including us, can read back.
- Your studying: the topics and pearls you have been given (so none is ever repeated), each study session's reading and teach-back times, your notes and highlights, and your recap card's colour and shape.
- Your lectures: if you add any, their text, pictures, parts, quizzes and your scores (see "My lectures" below).
- Invitations: a short code for the links on your shared recaps, and, if you joined from someone's recap, whose it was.
We use this only to run your account: to keep your notes and progress the same on every device you sign in on.
My lectures
If you add your own lecture slides or notes, your phone reads the file and sends us only its text and the pictures on its slides, with the file's name as the lecture's title. The file itself never leaves your phone. We keep the text and pictures in Cloudflare R2 (Cloudflare's storage), and the list of your lectures, their parts and your scores in your account. Only you can open them: they are never shown in our admin tools, and our usage counts record only time spent under "My lectures", never your lectures' titles or words. Pictures reach your phone through private links that stop working after a few hours.
When you ask the AI tutor about a lecture, check a teach-back, or take a lecture quiz, the text of that part (or of the whole lecture, for the quiz) is sent to the same AI services as the tutor, with your explanation when you ask for a check. Pictures are never sent to the AI. We keep the score of each check and quiz, and the key points the AI picked for each part, but never your explanation. Please only add lectures you are allowed to use for your own studying. Deleting a lecture, or your account, deletes its text, pictures and quiz.
How we count visits
To learn how the app is used, it sends simple events (the app was opened, a topic was given, a session finished, a recap was shared) with a random ID made by your device, the type of device and browser, the website that linked to us, and roughly where you opened the app that day (country, state and city, which Cloudflare works out from your connection). We never store IP addresses, these events never include what you type or say, and we use no advertising or third-party trackers. If your browser sends the Global Privacy Control signal, none of this is sent.
The AI tutor
If you use the AI tutor on the reading screen, your questions and the chat so far, with the topic you are reading, are sent to an AI service to write the answer: Google (Gemini), Groq or Mistral, and possibly Anthropic (Claude). We don't store the questions you type or the answers to them, and we don't send your name or email with them. Answers to the one-tap buttons (such as "Explain this topic"), which are the same for every student, are saved and shown to other students who tap the same button, so they load instantly. On their free plans, Google and Mistral may keep questions and use them to improve their AI, and people at Google may read them, so please don't type personal details (names, your own health or anyone else's) into the tutor. We count only how many questions are asked each day, by subject, to keep within each day's limits. Answers are written by AI and can be wrong: check important facts in your textbook. The tutor is a study aid and can't give personal medical advice.
Who can see your information
You. Our small team can see account details (such as your email) to help you, but your notes are never shown in our admin tools. We don't sell or share your information. It is stored with the companies that host the app for us (Cloudflare, including Cloudflare R2 for lectures, Netlify, Render, Neon and Upstash), who keep it secure and use it only to provide their service.
Cookies and your device
- tmm_session keeps you signed in on that device. It lasts up to a year from the last day you use the app; signing out ends it at once.
- tmm_csrftoken protects your account from other websites trying to act as you.
The app also keeps a copy of your notes and progress in your browser so it works offline.
How long we keep it
- Account information, notes, lectures and study history: until you delete them or your account.
- A lecture whose upload never finished is removed after a day.
- A deleted note's words are removed at once. A small marker without any words stays for up to 90 days so your other devices know to remove it too.
- Visit events: about 13 months. Daily totals with no device IDs are kept to show long-term trends.
Your choices and rights
- See and download your data: open the app, tap the account button, then "Download my data".
- Correct it: change your name in your account; to change your email, write to us (below).
- Delete it: "Delete my account" removes your account, notes, lectures and study history for good. You can also delete any one lecture from the Library.
- Complain: you can contact us first, and you can also complain to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission.
Emails
We only email you about your account: confirming your address, resetting your password, and security notices such as a password change. No marketing.
